Stirling, Scotland – Ceangail CIC, a well-known social enterprise based in Stirling, has made a significant impact on the local community through its various volunteer initiatives. The organization’s focus on social impact and personal development not only benefits the region but also provides opportunities for young people through its Skills Connect vocational training programs.
Since its establishment in 2012, Ceangail’s mission has been to inspire young people to pursue careers in tourism through vocational training. The organization has been instrumental in engaging volunteers from central Scotland in its community projects. These projects include a range of programs, from 3-day vocational training to informative sessions on mental health and wellbeing.
One of Ceangail’s longest-running projects involves a vocational training program in conjunction with the Stirling Highland Games, an annual event held at Stirling Sports Village. This project has successfully engaged over 300 volunteers and supported 170 young people since its inception in 2014. Through this project, young people have developed employability skills and gained practical experience, paving the way for future employment opportunities.
Una McLachlan, a longtime volunteer and committee member, shares her experience of working with Ceangail: “Volunteering with Ceangail CIC has allowed me to connect with the Stirling community and the other 50-odd volunteers that support the Stirling Highland Games. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of running events locally and feel more empowered to make a difference.”
Ceangail CIC places a strong emphasis on engaging young people in meaningful activities that promote personal and professional growth. Through structured vocational training programs, young people aged 16 and above are given opportunities to develop valuable skills, build confidence, and gain practical experience in the tourism sector. Activities such as event planning, digital media, and heritage tour guiding help them develop skills in leadership, organization, and teamwork.
A local high school teacher shares their experience of seeing Ceangail’s impact on students: “All of our young people that Ceangail has worked with have enjoyed their program. The educators listen to them, support them, challenge them, and give them opportunities they potentially would not get. It’s great to work with you again.”
In addition to immediate volunteer activities, Ceangail is committed to becoming a sustainable social enterprise that addresses long-term community needs. The organization reinvests profits from revenue-generating initiatives back into the community, ensuring a lasting impact. Ceangail has been in contact with the local authority since 2016 to improve the land where the annual highland games event takes place. This vision, if realized, will allow the social enterprise to host more volunteer programs and provide greater opportunities for Stirling residents to get involved. The event delivery also supports the local economic development strategy and fosters a sense of belonging and community spirit.
As Ceangail continues to pursue its vision, the organization remains dedicated to encouraging more people to volunteer. Future plans include the delivery of three events each year, providing up to 150 volunteers with opportunities for personal development, friendships, and socializing.
